Course Outline
Introduction to Money and Financial System/ Interest Rates and Term Structure/ Investment and Savings/ Exchange Rates and the Foreign Exchange Markets/ Asymmetric Information and the Role of Financial Intermediation/ Financial Crises and Financial Regulations/ Bank Management/ Money Multiplier and Supply of Money/ Central Banking and Tools of Monetary Policies/ Models of Monetary Demand/ Money, Inflation and Monetary Policies. |

課程目標 |
In this course we are primarily interested in the role of financial intermediaries that arise between ultimate borrowers and lenders. Banks, the intermediaries that take deposits and make loans, are of particular importance not only because of their long time dominance in the entire financial system but also of their nature of intrinsic instability. We will study the origination of financial intermediation and the impact of financial crises to the aggregate economy. Due to the potentially enormous impact of financial crises on the economy, the financial industry is heavily regulated. We will discuss the influence of regulations on the development of financial markets. In turn, we will learn how the financial regulations had evolved in face of fast-growing financial innovations. Finally, we will discuss how the central bank controls the supply of money and uses available tools to achieve the desired goals, and how the public reacts to changes of monetary policies.
